Overview

Aunties Dumplings Restaurant, nestled on Koornang Road in Carnegie, brings a slice of Shanghai’s rich dumpling tradition to Victoria. This modest eatery specializes in a range of dumplings and classic regional dishes, making it a go-to spot for those craving authentic Chinese flavors without the fuss.

The standout here is undoubtedly their Pan Fried Pork Dumplings: crispy on the outside, tender and juicy within, they capture that perfect balance of texture and flavor. Complementing them are the Xiao Long Bao, delicate soup-filled pockets that transport you right to the streets of Shanghai. Alongside these, dishes like the Shanghai Fried Noodles and Fried Beef Keow Teow offer comforting, hearty options for noodle lovers, while the Pork BBQ Steamed Buns showcase time-honored techniques and rich, savory fillings.

Set in a simple, no-frills space, Aunties Dumplings caters mainly to locals and those seeking quick takeout meals. The ambiance reflects its focus on food rather than decor, which may feel humble or even underwhelming for some patrons. However, this unpretentious approach aligns with the essence of traditional dumpling eateries found throughout China, where the emphasis is on hearty, well-prepared food over lavish interiors.

The experience can be mixed. Several diners praise the flavors and value, especially highlighting meal affordability and portion size. The staff’s straightforward service suits a fast-paced crowd, though some have noted communication gaps and moments of indifference. Additionally, the restaurant operates on a cash-only basis, a factor to keep in mind when planning your visit. A minor quibble among customers has been the handling of sauce charges, which could benefit from clearer communication to avoid surprises.

For those with a deeper appreciation for Chinese culinary heritage, Aunties Dumplings offers dishes like Shanghai Style Salty Duck and Chinese Broccoli with Oyster Sauce, providing a refreshing break from the typical dumpling fare. The menu extends into soups and vegetarian options, accommodating diverse tastes and dietary preferences.

All told, Aunties Dumplings Restaurant is an unassuming gem for dumpling aficionados and casual diners alike who value authentic flavors and reasonable prices over polished presentation. Its location in Carnegie makes it an accessible spot for locals craving a genuine taste of Shanghai-style comfort food. With a few tweaks in service and environment, it has the potential to elevate its standing even further in Melbourne’s vibrant Chinese dining scene.

Quick takeout meal. Dumplings were great. Infact, very good. Fried rice looks so impressive with the omelette placed over it. It was ok, but had a weird after taste. Can’t quite put my finger on it…… Thankfully she gave me my sauces for free as I did see that little 20c sauce charge signage afterwards as well……and noted some people have been caught out in the comments below. It would be easier to assume everyone wants sauces or ask at the time of purchase - ‘which sauce would you like’ and then upsell or absorb it in prices. Much easier than getting people to comment or write about it. Will go back for these dumplings for sure.

Cheapest dumplings/Chinese in Carnegie. Had the pan fried pork and boiled vegetable dumplings. They may not taste the best, but they’re the cheapest! Still of reasonable quality. Have also tried the Shanghai fried noodles which was good. They only take cash. Expect to spend under $15 for each dish here.

What a great little restaurant. Having lived in Asia for many years, my partner and I definitely enjoyed the food at this restaurant. We had some steamed BBQ pork buns, Xiao Long Bao (dumplings) and some Fried Keow Teoy. Whilst the Fried Koew Teoy was a bit different to what we had experienced overseas, it was delicious. In fact all of the food was delicious. Great service and a quaint and simple restaurant.

I usually like dumplings, and I thought it would be a similar case but, sadly wasn't. Firstly, their communication skills are poor considering the area they're located in, which secondly, ties in with their customer service. There was a weird rotting smell in the shop, but when we asked the server, she responded: could be food! Thirdly, I want to comment on the decor, which seemed more shabby compared to some other in the same strip. Fourthly, I ordered chicken dumplings in chilli oil soup, which was super oily, and the outer layer of the dumplings was very thick, and the whole thing had no flavour. Overall, I was quite dissatisfied with the experience.

The food was adequate but lacked anything memorable, while the service came across as indifferent. Overall, the visit didn't make a lasting impression.
